The California State University Channel Islands Art major focuses on interdisciplinary studies in fine art, digital art technology, graphic design and art history, emphasizing an innovative approach to artistic process, technique and problem solving. Through the integration of traditional media and digital technologies, courses in studio art, art history and interdisciplinary studies focus on developing a solid artistic foundation, leading to advanced work in art media and theory. In-depth study is available in the areas of two-dimensional art, three-dimensional art, digital media/time-based art, communication design technology (graphic design) and art history. CSUCI is located in Ventura County, California, six miles from the Pacific Ocean and one hour from Los Angeles, world class museums, international art galleries and major Hollywood film, animation and entertainment studios.

Q. How do I apply to CSUCI and become an ART Major.
A. First apply to the University Declare yourself an ART Major (10021). After you are accepted to CSUCI, you can take any courses offered in the ART Program once you have fulfilled the prerequisites or have taken an equivalent prerequisite at another accredited institution.

2. Declare yourself as an ART Major (10021).
3. Upon acceptance to CSUCI get advisement from the CSUCI Advisement Center.
4. Get specific advisement regarding ART courses, options and specializations from the ART Program Advisor.
5. Register for courses.
6. Start making art.

Q. Does the CSUCI ART Program require a portfolio review before admitting students?

A. No, at this time there is not a portfolio requirement to be amitted to the CSUCI ART Major, BA degree Program.

Q. How many units is the CSUCI Art Major?
A. The CSUCI ART Major is 57 (Semester Units) of ART course, (24 Lower Division and 33 Upper Division Units). These are in addition to University requirements for General Education: (48 units), Title 5 U.S. Government Courses: (6 units), and Additional University Electives: (9 units) . A total of 120 units are required for the BA Degree in ART.

Q. How do I apply to the University ?

Q. Does CSUCI offer an MFA degree in ART or Design or an MA degree in Art History?
A. CSUCI is the newest campus of the California State University system, having recently opened in Fall 2003. At this time, CSUCI does not offer graduate programs in Art or Art History. We anticipate beginning the MFA degree program in Fall 2008.

Q. What are the CSUCI registration fees / tuition?
A. California Resident overall full-time fees/tuition are: $2980 (Academic Year); Nonresident (U.S. and foriegn) fees: $339 per unit. This does not include books, supplies, food or housing.

Q. What kind of computers & software do you use?
A. The CSUCI ART Program courses are conducted on state-of-the-art Macintosh G5 computers loaded with dual 2.5 gig processors, CD-DVD read-write superdrives and 17 inch flat-screen monitors all connected to the dedicated ART server with storage files for each student. Software includes the latest versions of: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe AfterEffects, Painter, Final Cut Pro, Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Director MX, Quark Express, Vectorworks, Cinema 4D, Alias Wavefront MAYA, DVD Studio Pro, and numerous others. The CSUCI Digital Art lab is also equipped with audio production equipment including MIDI digital audio system with a Midiman Oxygen keyboard, Reason, Pro Tools, M-Box, The ART Program also has Nikon and Cannon digital still cameras and Sony GL2 mini DV cameras as well as Bogen tripods, Steadycam, Fishpole Booms and Shotgun Mics and light kits that may be checked out by ART students enrolled in specific courses that utilize the equipment for student projects.

Q. What kind of job can I expect get after graduation?
A. Study in ART leads to a wide range of opportunities in today's professional and academic fields. Careers include positions in the visual arts in painting, sculpture, graphic design, Web design, interactive multimedia, computer graphics, digital photography, video art, digital film and visual effects, animation and 3D computer animation, broadcast graphics, video game design, work in galleries, museums, teaching professions and numerous other opportunities in the fine arts, commercial arts or entertainment industry. If you are a motivated, creative, focused artist, and you work hard, you will achieve your goal. CSUCI is located only an hour away from some of the world's best museums, art galleries and major Hollywood entertainment studios. Numerous opportunities await the educated/skilled artist. Of course computer skills are important, and with time and practice almost anyone can learn just about any computer platform and software program. It is the artist with unique creative vision, technical competency and the portfolio to back it up that attains their goal. CSUCI's excellent faculty, all practicing artists and designers, do their best to facilitate your education and professiona lpreparation. When you graduate from CSUCI you will not only have artistic and technical skills, you will have explored numerous methods and concepts as well as the means to put them to use.
